Unique, aesthetic and gorgeous Mozambique Island trade bead jewelry collection design for women fashion accessories and jewelry gift ideas.
The Mozambique Island trade bead jewelry collection is designed by Alexandra Amaro, a talented jewelry designer based in San Francisco Bay Area, California.
Amaro brings a contemporary twist to an African aesthetic. Authentic African trade beads and African hardwood are central components of her earthy, stylish handmade jewelry collections.
These pieces include 300-year-old trade beads found at Mozambique Island in Southern Africa. Originally made in Europe and India, these glass and gemstone beads were used as currency by traders and, after multiple shipwrecks off the coast over the years, now wash up on Mozambique Island’s beaches.
Today when the tides are low, local boys on the island dig in the exposed sand flats for the remnants of these treasures. There will come a day when the Mozambique Island trade beads are no longer available. Until then Amaro hope that by paying a fair price to the bead boys, she can make a small difference in their lives.
